WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 1, 2018) – The Asia Group announced today that Ambassador Joseph Y. Yun has joined the firm as Senior Advisor. Ambassador Yun brings over three decades of experience at the highest levels of the U.S. foreign service. Most recently serving as the U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy, he played an instrumental role in reopening the “New York channel,” a direct communication line with officials from Pyongyang.
In addition, he served as U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia, spearheading two presidential visits to the country and bolstering economic and strategic ties between the two countries. These engagements culminated in the signing of the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement in 2014, which fostered deeper business, cultural, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Ambassador Yun also oversaw diplomatic efforts in the region from Washington D.C. as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Korea and Japan, responsible for all aspects of bilateral relations with the two treaty allies.From 2011 to 2013, he served asPrincipal Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and led efforts to normalize diplomatic relations with Myanmar. In 2010, Ambassador Yun became the first senior U.S. diplomat to visit Myanmar since the release of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. He also worked to lay the foundation for official participation by the President of the United States in the annual East Asian Summits.
