Associate/Senior Associate – Japan (DC)

The Asia Group, LLC is now accepting applications for a Japan Associate/Senior Associate to join our Washington, D.C. office.

The Japan Associate/Senior Associate will join a fast-paced, innovative team that operates at the forefront of public policy and business in Japan and across the Indo-Pacific region. From developing and implementing bespoke market access and expansion campaigns to enhancing political brand equity, the Associate/Senior Associate will advance policy-driven solutions to help TAG’s clients capture new growth opportunities throughout the region. This role requires a strong foundation of Japan-related experience, either in the private sector or working with or within the public sector.

The Associate/Senior Associate will be an integral member of TAG’s growing Japan Practice in D.C., led by Ambassador Kurt Tong, and will play a key role in all aspects of the firm’s client development and strategy execution on Japan. A successful candidate will have excellent research and writing skills, with a strong command of the political, security, regulatory, business, and macroeconomic environments in Japan. Experience with tech and digital policy or health policy is highly valued. A demonstrated ability to work within tight timelines, engage clients with poise and clarity, and work collaboratively is expected. This position may involve domestic and international travel. Consistent with The Asia Group’s professional development tradition, this position includes potential for upward growth and promotion.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Create and support policy-driven engagement strategies that align with clients’ business objectives in the region;
  • Manage working-level client relationships and participate in regular client engagements alongside senior staff of the Japan practice;
  • Conduct thorough and meticulous industry and political research and analysis utilizing English and Japanese primary resources;
  • Draft executive memos, reports, briefing materials, and other written products that impact key client priorities, including political, economic, and regulatory developments;
  • Monitor local print and online media for important developments related to client equities and opportunities for business development; and
  • Support planning and implementation of client engagements and activities in Washington, D.C., and Japan
Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (MA/MBA/JD/MPH) or equivalent practical work experience related to Japan (for senior associate, at least five-to-seven-years’ work experience);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Japanese politics and economics and U.S. relations with Asia, preferably with at least three years of work experience in a client-facing industry, research institute, government, or in government relations;
  • Outstanding research, writing, and analytical skills in English, including ability to communicate professionally with clients;
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines and manage competing priorities; for senior associate, experience in client servicing and project management.
  • Team player with positive and professional attitude; eager for professional development and open to learning;
  • Self-starter with ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment;
  • Can-do attitude and willingness to support both critical client matters and administrative tasks; and,
  • Flexibility with respect to working and communication hours, particularly when coordinating with clients and team members in Japan.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Background or interest in tech and digital policy or in health policy;
  • Professional proficiency or native fluency in Japanese;
  • On-the-ground experience in Japan, including a network of pertinent relationships; and,
  • Experience in government relations or comparable experience demonstrating the ability to integrate public policy with corporate strategy.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Employees will work in an in-person environment, with remote benefits allowing flexibility on an as-needed basis. TAG provides competitive health benefits and generous paid time off, with regular training opportunities available to its employees. For this role, TAG offers a salary of $68,000-$105,000 with eligibility for a discretionary end of year bonus.
