Senior Associate

Josh Young is a Senior Associate at The Asia Group, where he helps the firm’s defense and aerospace clients achieve their goals by providing the geopolitical and regional expertise needed to navigate the intricacies of the Indo-Pacific region.

Prior to joining The Asia Group, Josh served at the Department of Defense as the Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Affairs.  In this capacity, Josh advised the Department’s leaders at the highest levels on the implementation of the 2018 National Defense Strategy as it pertained to the Indo-Pacific. In addition, Josh was responsible for leading several strategic messaging and legislative campaigns aimed at advancing the Department’s priorities across the Indo-Pacific region.

While at the Department, Josh also served as a Country Director for Japan where he managed key Alliance issues to include foreign military sales, co-development, ballistic missile defense, U.S. force posture, plans, and bilateral efforts in the cyber and space domains.  Josh was also the Policy lead for several strategic engagements with the Government of Japan such as the U.S.-Japan Future Fighter Study Team and the Roles, Missions, and Capabilities Working Group – efforts key to ensuring the U.S.-Japan Alliance remains strong for decades to come.

Josh also brings Capitol Hill experience to the team, as he was a former staffer on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs’ Asia-Pacific Subcommittee, where he covered a variety of issues in the Indo-Pacific to include Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, and China – as well as spearheading legislation to counter state-sponsored cyberattacks against the United States.

Josh is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he received both a Master’s in Public & International Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.  Josh lives in Cheverly, Maryland with his wife and two sons.
