Associate

Tra Hoang is an Associate at The Asia Group, where she provides in-depth analysis on political and economic developments in Southeast Asia to inform business advocacy and market expansion strategies. In this capacity, Tra leverages her unique insight of the region’s political dynamics as well as the Vietnamese local market to help clients navigate regulatory challenges across a variety of sectors, including information communications technology (ICT), manufacturing, automotive, defense, and energy.

Prior to joining The Asia Group, Tra served as a Policy Fellow at the Information Technology Industry Council and a Summer Analyst at Access Partnership, an ICT policy consultancy based out of Singapore. In these roles, she tracked industry-specific developments and helped global clients unpack emerging technology trends across the Asia-Pacific, particularly in the areas of digital commerce, cybersecurity, and privacy. As part of her work, Tra supported a number of stakeholder mapping initiatives and facilitated engagement with local policymakers to address regulatory concerns in emerging markets such as Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Tra also brings experience from her work at the US-ASEAN Business Council, a leading regionally focused business association headquartered in Washington, D.C., where she delivered business intelligence and legislative updates to Fortune 500 companies with interests in high-growth Southeast Asian markets. At the council, she provided logistical support for multiple high-level roundtables and business missions to help the U.S. private sector address barriers to trade and investment and establish relationships with key ASEAN government stakeholders. Tra also previously worked at Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she drafted policy briefs on various ASEAN connectivity initiatives and translated a project handbook on the development of the ASEAN Economic Community.

Tra holds a Master of Arts in Asian Studies from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service with double concentration on politics and security and the international political economy of Asia. While at Georgetown, she served as the Senior Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Forum and Associate Editor of the Georgetown Journal of Asian Affairs. Tra also holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Religion from Colgate University, and spent a semester pursuing political science studies at University College London. She is a Hanoi native and speaks fluent Vietnamese.
