Kunie Koyama is a Senior Associate for The Asia Group’s Japan practice. Based in Tokyo, she offers her extensive experience and analytical insights on policy issues in the U.S.-Japan alliance and supports planning and implementation of client engagements and activities in Japan. With her hands-on professional experience in the U.S.-Japan alliance, Kunie is committed to building strategic networks and promoting business opportunities for firms in Japan’s defense community along with other sectors.
Kunie’s understanding of U.S.-Japan defense relations is based on a 13-year career in both the U.S. and Japanese governments. While at the U.S. Embassy, Tokyo (2011-2017), Kunie advised American diplomats on issues related to politics, foreign policy, and security. Prior to that, Kunie served as a Civilian Official at the Japan Ministry of Defense (2004-2011), where she managed politically sensitive programs and projects in close coordination with civilian and military stakeholders.
Kunie holds a Master of Social Science in Strategy and Diplomacy from National University of Malaysia and a Master of Arts in Political Science from Aoyama Gakuin University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Language and Area Studies from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
