Marshall Li is an Associate at The Asia Group, based in the Hong Kong office. He brings a deep understanding of China’s political economy, innovation regime, and policy research to support clients across various sectors. Marshall advises multinational firms on strategic investments, China’s rapidly evolving technology and competitive landscape, as well as complex, high-stakes regulatory challenges.
Prior to joining The Asia Group, Marshall researched and taught on contemporary China with focus on political economy and public health governance for over half a decade. His work has informed C-suite strategy and appeared in academic publications, journals, and policy briefs in both English and Chinese. He spent time at Asia Society Northern California, where he co-authored the multi-part series “Exploring AI Issues Across the United States and China”. He also had a stint at a New York-based law firm and PwC China. Marshall was a finalist for Rhodes China in 2022 and received the Leader of Tomorrow award at the 54th St Gallen Symposium in Switzerland.
Marshall holds a Master’s in Global Affairs from Tsinghua University, where he was a Schwarzman Scholar; an MPhil in Economic and Social History from the University of Cambridge; and a BA in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley. He is fluent in Mandarin and English and conversational in Cantonese. He was a competitive collegiate rower and continues to be a creative writer in his free time. His poetry collection, Peihang’s Poems, was published in 2015 in Beijing.
