Ian Wong is an Associate at The Asia Group, based in Hong Kong. In this role, Ian analyzes policy and regulatory trends to help clients curate their business strategies in the Greater China region.
Prior to joining The Asia Group, Ian worked with the Geopolitical practice at Trivium China, monitoring advancements in China’s export control regime and tracking China-targeted trade barriers in the electric vehicle industry. He has spent time working in other policy research roles as well, including at Albright Stonebridge Group and the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. Most recently, he spent time at luxury travel agency WildChina in Beijing, coordinating with service providers across the country to develop new tourism programs for clients.
He holds an Master of Arts degree in China Studies as a Yenching Scholar at Peking University in Beijing. For his dissertation, he conducted field work in 15 provinces across China, interviewing government officials, business owners, and village residents to analyze how local tourism projects are shaping an emerging “Chinese identity”. He graduated Phi Betta Kappa and with High Distinction from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Sociology.
Born in Boston and attending secondary school in Hong Kong, Ian has since spent time in Berkeley, Nagasaki, Beijing, and Shanghai. He speaks English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, and is proficient in Japanese. In his free time, he enjoys playing slowpitch softball, watching California Golden Bears, and village hopping across China.
