Andrew (Andy) Shaw

Managing Director

Andrew (Andy) Shaw is Managing Director for Southeast Asia based in Bangkok, Thailand where he leverages his nearly three decades of diplomatic experience focused on Southeast Asia and Greater China to advance economic and commercial interests.

Prior to joining The Asia Group, Andy served as a senior Foreign Service Officer based in Asia and Washington.  He most recently served as Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok where he led his team during negotiations to lower Thailand’s reciprocal tariffs, advanced energy cooperation including entering into force the U.S.-Thailand agreement on civil nuclear cooperation, supported U.S. investments in Thailand including major new commitments from U.S. hyperscalers, and elevated economic priorities in bilateral strategic discussions.  Andy previously served as Economic Counselor in Jakarta, Indonesia where he promoted increased U.S. investment in Indonesia’s mining sector and boosted bilateral trade and clean energy investments.  In Beijing, he served as Deputy Economic Minister Counselor as well as in several economic and energy positions.  In Hong Kong, Andy was the head of the Economic-Political Section during the Occupy Central protests.

In Washington, Andy served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary and Office Director in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs where he led efforts on strategic competition in the UN system focusing on UN elections and personnel.  He also served as Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs, Special Assistant to former Under Secretary for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns during the start of P5 Iran nuclear talks, Special Assistant to former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq invasion, and as Thailand Desk Officer.

Andy is a graduate of Princeton University where he received his undergraduate degree in political-economy and his master’s degree in public policy.  He speaks Thai, Indonesian, and Mandarin Chinese.  In his spare time, he enjoys golf, mountain biking, and traveling with his wife Peggy and three sons.
