The Asia Group Expands China Practice with New Talent

Washington, DC | December 7, 2022 – The Asia Group (TAG) is pleased to announce that Kevin Bassney and Brett Fetterly have joined as vice presidents in the China practice, further enhancing the firm’s leading-edge capabilities and services in the Greater China region.

Kevin and Brett collectively bring a unique blend of business-relevant expertise at the intersection of technology and policy, which will augment TAG’s depth and servicing capabilities – ensuring client success against the backdrop of an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. Kevin’s diverse experiences in Silicon Valley – from investment banking and consulting to managing an AI-focused startup – provide for turnkey solutions in business strategy and advisory for TAG clients. As former National Security Advisor to Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska), Brett led high-impact legislative engagements spanning export controls, technology, and trade policy, further deepening TAG’s ability to help clients understand and anticipate legislative trends shaping commercial opportunities in China and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

“Brett and Kevin are representative of TAG’s commitment to investing in world-class talent,” said TAG CEO and Co-Founder Nirav Patel. “Each brings complementary perspectives and technical expertise at the nexus of China policy and business that will not only bolster existing workstreams but generate new points of value for clients.”

Kevin Bassney is an experienced business consultant who brings expertise across strategic advisory, private equity, and technology. Prior to joining TAG, Kevin was Chief of Staff to the CEO of People.ai, where he led strategic partnership development. Previously, Kevin was a senior director at Rice, Hadley, Gates, and Manuel, where he led staffing for the firm’s Silicon Valley office, advising Fortune 500 clients on navigating complex geopolitical, regulatory, and commercial engagements across the Indo-Pacific, Europe, and other regional markets. Kevin brings strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills to TAG, drawing from his experience in portfolio management at Morgan Stanley. Kevin served in the U.S. Army as a captain.

Brett Fetterly is a U.S. legislative expert, specializing on policy issues at the nexus of national security and commerce – spanning export controls, trade policy, energy security, cybersecurity, and U.S. defense posture in the Indo-Pacific region. Prior to joining TAG, Brett served as National Security Advisor to Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska), advising on policy positions and engagements related to the senator’s assignments on the Armed Services, Intelligence, Banking, Judiciary, and Finance committees. In this capacity, Brett negotiated key aspects of the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act, as well as the annual National Defense Authorization Act. Prior to his time on Capitol Hill, Brett was a policy advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Energy, supporting the transition between presidential administrations in 2017, and the foreign and defense policy director for a 2016 presidential campaign.
