“APEC is all about making steady but gradual progress on economic development and economic integration using a unique multilateral line-up of members. Thus it is not well-suited to Donald Trump’s transactional, one-one-one, one-off deal and personalized approach to getting things done. That said, working level officials in the next Trump administration could contribute to APEC

“Before the election in the US, there was a lot of activity in Australia to work out who is going to win and, if so, what are the policies going to be,” Sinodinos said Tuesday in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Sydney. “The Australian government will be relatively well-prepared for what’s coming.”

Following disengagement on the India-China frontier in Ladakh, there’s speculation about how much bilateral economic relations will, and should be, normalised. In some circles this has taken a silly turn, with claims of an alleged B&W divide between economic ministries and diplomatic/security authorities. Complex policy choices are reduced to simplistic Manichean dualism.

“China doesn’t want to be associated with election interference and therefore has no official position regarding Trump versus Harris,” says Han Lin, China Country Director, The Asia Group.  Under Trump, China could secure a larger slice of the global economic pie. However, due to higher tariffs, the global pie could be expected to shrink.”
