Research Associate (DC)

The Asia Group, LLC is now accepting applications for a full-time research Associate to join our Washington, D.C. office with an expected start date in August or September 2024.

The Asia Group is seeking to hire an Associate for the firm’s Research and Analytics Team. The Research Team works across the firm’s regional and sector teams to inform clients on key policy, business, and economic trends affecting companies and their prospects in Asia. Candidates should have an MBA or a master’s degree in international relations, political science, economics, Asian studies, or a related field. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only but with significant relevant work experience will also be considered. The ideal candidate can source and synthesize quantitative information to generate original graphics and analytic reports, in addition to having a strong understanding of macroeconomic trends, business climates, and political dynamics across the Indo-Pacific. Knowledge of one or more Asian languages and/or experience working and living in Asia is a plus. 

Responsibilities Include:
  • Developing original and compelling data visualizations, graphics, and other media on a daily timeline to support the firm’s suite of top-tier research and analytic products;
  • Drafting memos, long-form reports, decks, and briefings for clients on pan-Indo-Pacific issues and diplomatic engagements, especially developments related to China and India;
  • Contributing original research and thought leadership to innovations on policy, business and economic trends affecting businesses in the Indo-Pacific;
  • Coordinating across teams to generate pan Indo-Pacific products;
  • Compiling, evaluating, and presenting metrics to assess the impact of TAG’s suite of analytic products;

Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • Exceptional data visualization, writing, research, and editorial skills;
  • Exemplary facility with interpersonal communication and a proven track record of collaborating effectively within and among teams;
  • MA or equivalent academic/practical experience related to economic and policy issues in Asia;
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive and communicate original analysis on economic and political trends, especially in the Indo-Pacific;
  • Strong grasp of business strategy and emerging macroeconomic trends, especially in the Indo-Pacific region;
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and ability to produce quality products on a tight deadline;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
Desired Focus and Expertise:
  • Elementary-to-intermediate experience in statistical modelling (e.g., linear regression and some non-linear models);
  • Working proficiency in R, Stata, Tableau, and other advanced data visualization tools;
  • Prior experience searching for, aggregating, and manipulating trade, development, and economic data from publicly available depositories
  • 2-4 years of work experience in a related field or industry;
  • Previous exposure to business-style writing;
  • Expertise in graphic design, especially with the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator);
  • Experience with generative artificial intelligence platforms and big data analytics;
  • Advanced reading proficiency in an Asian language, especially Mandarin;
  • On-the-ground work experience in Asia.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Employees will work in an in-person environment, with remote benefits allowing flexibility on an as-needed basis. TAG provides competitive health benefits and generous paid time off, with regular training opportunities available to its employees. For this role, TAG offers a salary of $68,000-$92,000 with eligibility for a discretionary end of year bonus.
