Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani is an associate vice president at The Asia Group, where he leads the firm’s Malaysia Practice. He advises multinational companies and investors on political risk and regulatory strategy across the region. He works closely with senior government stakeholders and C-suite executives to translate political and regulatory developments into actionable strategies for market entry, expansion, and stakeholder engagement.
With over 15 years of experience across journalism, political analysis, and strategic advisory, Asrul brings deep expertise on the region’s political and landscape policy environment. He began his career as a journalist covering Malaysian politics and public affairs, with bylines in The Malaysian Insider, Malay Mail, The Edge, and Singapore’s The Straits Times.
He later served as a political officer at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, receiving the Diplomatic Excellence Award in 2014 for outstanding political engagement. He is widely quoted in international media on Malaysian politics and Southeast Asian affairs, including the South China Morning Post, Channel NewsAsia, and Bloomberg.
Prior to joining The Asia Group, Asrul spent nearly nine years at BowerGroupAsia, rising from junior analyst to deputy managing director and helping grow the Malaysian office from a three-person team to a twenty-strong advisory practice. In that role, he advised global companies across technology, financial services, life sciences, and consumer industries on government engagement and regulatory strategy in Malaysia.
Asrul holds a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and a Bachelor of Human Sciences in Political Science from the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia, and spent his formative years across Davao City, New Delhi, and Budapest — an early grounding in the cultural fluency that defines his approach to the region.
