George Chen is a Partner and Co-Chair of Digital Practice at The Asia Group (TAG), advising Fortune 500 clients on geopolitics and complex regulatory issues. In this role, George leads TAG’s Hong Kong and Taiwan offices and coordinates with TAG headquarters in Washington, DC on business development, client servicing, and new strategic initiatives in the broad Indo-Pacific region.
Concurrently, George is also a Senior Fellow of Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. George teaches “Digital Society and Governance” for Master students at HKU and Schwarzman.
Prior to joining TAG, George was Meta’s first and most senior policy leader for Greater China, Mongolia, and Central Asia for more than seven years. Earlier in his career, George held various editorial and management positions for media organizations including the South China Morning Post, Reuters, and Dow Jones for over a decade.
An influential scholar with focus on the intersection between technologies and public policy, George has been named a Salzburg Global Fellow (2024), Visiting Scholar at National Chengchi University in Taipei (2023), an alumnus of U.S. State Department International Visitor Leadership Program (2015), Yale World Fellow at Yale University (2014) and an Asia 21 Young Leadership Fellow of the Asia Society (2007). In 2022, George was awarded the “Medal of Friendship” by the President of Mongolia, one of the country’s highest honors for foreigners, for his contributions to Mongolia’s information technology industry development.
An author of four books about business and politics in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, George received his Master’s degree of international and public affairs with distinction from HKU, where he remains a doctoral candidate for his research on disinformation. George has been on the Board of American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong since 2019. He speaks Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Shanghai dialect, and English.
In his leisure time, George is a street photographer and collects Leica cameras.
