George Chen

Managing Director for Hong Kong & Taiwan

George Chen is Managing Director for Hong Kong and Taiwan at The Asia Group (TAG). Based in Hong Kong, George brings over two decades of professional experience to TAG in helping multinationals navigate complex commercial challenges at the intersection of technology and national security, supply chain resiliency, and strategic partnership development across the Indo-Pacific region.

Concurrently, George is a Senior Fellow for the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), where he teaches masters-level students and has helped to launch and lead the university’s Tech for Good Initiative. Additionally in Taipei, George is a Visiting Scholar at National Chengchi University, where he hosts seminars about new media and technologies.

Prior to joining TAG, George was Managing Director of Public Policy for Greater China, Mongolia, and Central Asia for Meta, previously known as Facebook (2016-2023). In that role, George was Meta’s senior policy representative and supply chain leader in the Asia-Pacific region, and managed Meta’s work on U.S.-China relations and regional geopolitical issues. Earlier in his career, George worked for major media organizations in Hong Kong and Shanghai, including the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Reuters, and Dow Jones. George was the youngest Managing Editor appointed by the SCMP in its century-long history. He also had stints for Reuters in New York, London, and Dubai.

In 2014, Yale University appointed George to be a Yale World Fellow. George is also a 2015 recipient of the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). In 2007, He was chosen to be an Asia 21 Young Leader by the New York-headquartered Asia Society. George was a five-time judge (2014-2018) and one-time winner (2015) for journalism awards presented by the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA). In 2022, George was awarded Mongolian President’s “Medal of Friendship” – one of the highest honors given to foreigners – for his contributions to Mongolia’s information technology industry development.

George earned his Master of International and Public Affairs with concentration on the strategic triangle of US-China-Taiwan relations from HKU and is a doctoral candidate in public administration at HKU. He also studied U.S. foreign policy at The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. George has been on the board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong since 2019 and speaks English, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and his native Shanghai dialect. He is an author of four books about business and politics in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
