Rintaro is an Associate in The Asia Group’s Japan practice, where he researches and analyzes domestic political shifts, foreign and defense policy, economic and energy security, and technology policy developments. He was previously an Analyst in the Japan practice at the Washington, D.C. office.

Prior to joining The Asia Group, Rintaro interned at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he focused on Japan’s domestic and foreign policy, ranging from the revision of the three national security documents to Japan-South Korea relations. He also worked as an intern at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, supporting the Japan Chair with in-depth research memos on U.S. and Japanese engagements in the Indo-Pacific using primary and secondary sources. Rintaro also brings a unique perspective on Japanese domestic politics, having worked the summer/winter of 2018 and 2019 as an intern at the office of Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Koichi Hagiuda.

Rintaro graduated with a MA in Asian Studies (MASIA) at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, focusing his studies on the U.S.-Japan alliance, economic security in the Indo-Pacific, and Japanese domestic politics. He has extensive writing experience, having published in the Georgetown Journal of Asian Affairs, Nikkei Asia, The Diplomat,The National Interest, Tokyo Review, and Asia Tech Observer. Rintaro received a BA in Political Science from Northeastern University and completed his senior thesis on challenges and opportunities for U.S.-Japan economic security cooperation.

In his free time, Rintaro publishes a weekly newsletter covering the latest foreign policy, defense, economic, and political developments in Japan.
