Shino Matsuyama is a Tokyo-based Senior Associate in The Asia Group’s Japan practice, where she supports clients with analysis and advice on political, regulatory, and geostrategic issues in Japan.
Before joining The Asia Group, Shino spent nearly nine years as a journalist at The Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s leading national newspapers. As a political and foreign affairs reporter, she covered the Prime Minister’s Office, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, developing deep experience covering Japan’s political and foreign-policy decision-making. Her reporting focused on Japanese politics and foreign policy, U.S.-Japan relations, Japan-China relations, and regional security. She also accompanied Japanese prime ministers and foreign ministers on overseas visits and covered major bilateral and multilateral meetings, including U.S.-Japan summits, the G7, the G20, and APEC.
Shino holds a Master of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C., where she focused on U.S.-China relations and Japan’s role amid intensifying strategic competition between the two countries. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Policy Management from Keio University, where she also studied journalism and its role in society at the Institute for Journalism, Media & Communication Studies.
Shino is a native Japanese speaker and is fluent in English. Outside of work, she enjoys golf and travel.
