Taro Han is a vice president at The Asia Group, based in Tokyo. He provides geopolitical and policy analysis and advice to clients, particularly on trade policy and the energy sector, to help them succeed in the Japanese and broader Indo-Pacific markets.
Before joining The Asia Group, Taro served for 13 years at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), where he gained broad expertise in trade and energy policy, including extensive experience in handling issues in U.S.-Japan bilateral relations.
Taro’s final position at METI was Principal Deputy Director of the International Affairs Division at the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. In this role, he led U.S.-Japan bilateral cooperation in areas including LNG, nuclear energy, and critical minerals, while advancing other bilateral and multilateral initiatives.
Taro previously served as First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C., where he covered trade and energy policy. In this capacity, he worked closely with U.S. government agencies, including the White House National Security Council, the Department of State, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
Taro began his career at METI in 2013 and worked across a broad range of policy areas, including manufacturing industries, regulatory reform, product safety, and Russia policy; he also served at the Cabinet Secretariat.
Taro earned a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He also holds both a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Engineering in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Tokyo.
Taro is fluent in Japanese and English. Outside of work, Taro enjoys spending time with his young children, weightlifting, and reading Japanese and international literature.
