Japan Country Director

Tokuko Shironitta joined The Asia Group in September 2022 as the Japan Country Director to reinforce and expand TAG’s industry leading Japan practice. Leveraging her deep experience in government, think tanks and consulting, Tokuko will help global and Japanese corporates develop business strategies to seize opportunities and address market access challenges. Under her leadership, The Asia Group will continue to invest and build out its presence in Tokyo.

Prior to joining the Asia Group, Tokuko was Tokyo Office Director for the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), one of Japan’s leading international science-focused graduate universities, where she was responsible for building channels of communication and coordination between OIST and leading figures in the Japanese political, government and business communities.

Previously, Tokuko served for eight years as Managing Director of Hummingbird Advisories Pte. Ltd., a risk and policy consulting firm based in Singapore. Before moving to Singapore, she was a Political Specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo from 2000 to 2011, focusing on Japanese domestic politics and Japan’s bilateral relationships with China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Before joining the U.S. Embassy, she worked for three years as Project Coordinator and Research Associate for the Japan Chair Program at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Tokuko has a Master’s degree in International Affairs (East Asian Studies) from the Catholic University of America (Washington, DC) and a B.A. in Communications (Public Relations) from New England College (Henniker, NH). She is married to Tsuyoki Sato and has a daughter and a son.
