Arthur Sinodinos on Prime Minister Albanese’s Washington Visit

The Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO is Partner and Chair of The Asia Group’s Australia Practice. He most recently served as Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, where he was closely involved in negotiations related to AUKUS, the Quad, and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. Amb. Sinodinos previously served as Australia’s Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science and as Senator for New South Wales in the Australian Parliament from 2011 to 2019. He also served as Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, as well as Chief of Staff and Senior Economic Adviser to Prime Minister Hon. John Howard AC.

Arthur Sinodinos, the former Australian ambassador to the U.S. and current partner and chair of the Australia Practice at The Asia Group, says GWEO began because of discussions with the U.S. military that showed that once a war starts in the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. won’t be able to supply Australia with additional munitions as stocks will be rapidly depleted. So Australia needed to find a way to become more independent in munitions production.

The prime minister is continuing his visit in the US, with a White House dinner to take place tomorrow with a performance from the B-52s. Australia’s most recent former US ambassador, Arthur Sinodinos, said the Aukus deal is “looking more positive than [it was] even a week ago”. Speaking to ABC RN, Sinodinos said this is because the US has put another $3bn on the table for a submarine industrial base, meeting the concerns of Republican senators like Roger Wicker.
