Washington, D.C. – Amid heightened national awareness of discrimination and injustice directed toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States, The Asia Group Foundation will provide financial support to the Asian American Journalists Association, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center.
“We condemn the recent acts of violence against Asian Americans, and we are particularly concerned by the increase in documented violence in 2020 and 2021. We join others in grief over the lives lost. Racial discrimination and bias should have no place in our community, our society and our nation,” said Rexon Ryu, Managing Partner at The Asia Group and Chair of The Asia Group Foundation.
Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) works towards the visibility and inclusion of AAPI journalists in newsroom leadership, and towards equitable and accurate coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and AAPI issues. Since its founding in 1981, AAJA has grown to its current reach of 1,600 members across 20 chapters in the U.S. and Asia, including Washington, D.C., San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, the Philippines, and Bangladesh.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) is a legal advocacy group working to advance civil and human rights for the AAPI community through education, litigation, and public policy advocacy. AAJC focuses their efforts to promote equal protection of civil and human right including affirmative action, language access, and response to harassment and hate crimes; increase the visibility of Asian Americans by expanding federal immigration policies; and build political power of the AAPI electorate by protecting voting rights, hosting youth leadership summits, and creating community networks for direct services, social and cultural activities, among other initiatives.
Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC) is dedicated to advancing the civil and legal rights of Asian Americans by providing linguistically accessible and culturally appropriate legal services to low-income Asian immigrants in the Washington, D.C. area who have limited English proficiency. APALRC’s services focus on immigration and naturalization, crime victim assistance, affordable housing, domestic violence issues, and multilingual legal support. The APALRC staff and volunteer team speak more than 25 different Asian languages and dialects.
